What Is a Perforated Plate Screen?

A perforated plate screen — also called a punch plate screen or punched plate screen — is a round screening surface cut from a solid sheet of stainless steel rather than woven from individual wires, then welded to a standard separator screen ring. It installs in a round vibratory separator exactly the way a wire mesh screen does.

Because every opening is cut into solid stainless, the hole size cannot stretch, shift, or drift out of specification as the screen wears. Perforated plate screens are chosen for coarse, abrasive, and high-impact screening where woven wire does not last.

Perforated Plate vs. Wire Mesh Screens

Both types drop into the same machine and mount to the same style of ring. The difference is the screening surface, and it drives wear life, sizing consistency, and throughput.

  • Wear Life: A solid plate outlasts woven wire in abrasive and high-impact duty — the most common reason operations switch.
  • Sizing Consistency: Laser-cut holes hold their geometry, while woven openings can stretch and change the cut point as wires wear.
  • Open Area: Wire mesh wins here, running roughly 60–75% open area against a consistent 40% on perforated plate.
  • Fine Separations: Wire mesh handles fine cuts; perforated plate starts at 1/8" and is built for coarse sizing and scalping.
  • Clear Opening: Where fractional clear-opening wire cloth is specified for a coarse cut, a laser-cut plate delivers the same precise opening in solid stainless.

Hole Sizes, Open Area & Center Options

Every perforated plate screen in this collection is available in thirteen standard round hole sizes from 1/8" to 1", each on staggered centers spaced at 1.5 times the hole diameter. That spacing holds open area at a consistent 40% across the full range, so changing your cut size does not change how the deck behaves.

Center configuration varies by diameter. Smaller screens are available fully perforated or with a blank hexagon center, while larger diameters are built with a blank hexagon center and center hole as standard.

Every one of those specifications can also be built to order. Because each plate is CNC laser-cut rather than stamped from fixed tooling, we are not limited to the standard combinations listed here. We can change:

  • Hole size: down to 1/32", plus slotted, oval, and rectangular openings
  • Open area: tightening or opening up the stagger and center-to-center spacing moves the open area above or below the standard 40%
  • Center configuration: any blank center diameter or center hole size, or no blank center at all
  • Screen diameter: non-standard and legacy separator sizes outside the 18" to 60" range
  • Material thickness: 12 and 14 gauge in place of the standard 16 gauge

Screens are built to order on a 7–10 business day lead time, typically faster than a comparable wire mesh screen. Because every plate is cut and welded in our own shop rather than sourced from an outside mill, we control the schedule ourselves — so if a machine is down, call before you order and we will tell you what is possible. Non-standard diameters and legacy equipment are handled through our custom perforated plate screens.

Perforated Plate Screen FAQs

Is a punch plate screen the same as a perforated plate screen?
Yes. "Punch plate," "punched plate," and "perforated plate" all describe the same product. Ours are fiber-laser cut rather than punched, which holds a tighter tolerance on hole size and leaves a cleaner hole wall.

How do I know which hole size I need?
Start with the size of the material you want to pass through the screen. The hole dimension is the opening, so a 1/4" hole passes material smaller than 1/4". If you are replacing a wire mesh screen, match the clear opening of the mesh you are running now rather than the mesh count. If you are not sure, tell us your material and target cut and we will size it with you.

Do I need de-blinding balls or sliders with a perforated plate screen?
That depends on your material, not on the plate. Near-size or sticky product can peg a round hole the same way it pegs a mesh opening, and de-blinding media is most useful on coarse cuts like these. If blinding is a problem in your process today, we can spec the plate alongside sliders, balls, or a sandwich build.

Can a perforated plate screen be re-screened?
No. A wire mesh screen can be re-meshed onto its original ring, which is why we offer a rescreening service for those. A perforated plate screen is replaced as a complete unit — but far less often, which is most of the reason people move to plate in the first place.
