Liquid–Solid Separation for Beverage, Brewery, and Distillery
Beverage liquid–solid separation typically runs 60 to 200 mesh (250–75 µm) to pull pulp, sediment, and process solids out of a liquid stream. Unlike dry screening, throughput here is governed by open area and how fast liquid drains, not by particle size alone.
What makes beverage liquid–solid separation hard
The liquid is the product on some decks and the waste on others
Juice clarification keeps the underflow; spent-grain dewatering keeps the solids. That decision changes the whole screen specification, so it is worth stating explicitly before selecting mesh.
Solids are soft and deformable
Pulp, trub, and mash solids compress rather than sitting on the surface. Soft solids can extrude partway into an opening and stay there, which tends to blind a screen in a way rigid particles do not.
Drainage rate limits capacity
In liquid work, the binding constraint is usually how quickly liquid passes the mesh. Open area percentage matters as much as mesh number.
Sanitary and cleaning requirements
Beverage production carries the same sanitary expectations as other food work, plus sugar-rich residues that must not be left on the screen between runs.

These are sieve-standard openings. Actual woven wire cloth openings vary with wire diameter, so the figures on our mesh and wire sizing chart will read slightly smaller for the same mesh count — check that chart for the cloth you are ordering, and talk to us if the product sits between two ranges.
Screen material and configuration
316 stainless steel is the usual specification here — acidic juice, wort, and wash are more corrosive than most dry food products, and 316 handles chloride exposure better than 304.
Where blinding is the limiting factor, self-cleaning sandwich screens and de-blinding ball trays and kits generally recover more throughput than changing mesh count.
Common problems and what actually fixes them
Flow falls off but the screen looks clean
Soft solids lodged inside the openings rather than sitting on the surface. Back-flushing or an ultrasonic de-blinding system is more effective here than a mesh change.
Liquid overflowing the deck
The screen is drainage-limited. Look at open area and total screening area before going coarser — a coarser mesh may pass solids you need to keep out.
Corrosion or staining on the wire
Check the alloy. Acidic beverage streams generally want 316 rather than 304.

Most juice work sits between 100 and 150 mesh, with finer polishing duty going to 200 mesh.
Can a vibratory separator dewater spent grain?
Spent-grain dewatering can be handled on a round separator, typically in the 60–100 mesh range, keeping the solids rather than the liquid. Tell us your volumes and we will confirm whether a round separator suits the duty.
Should beverage screens be 304 or 316 stainless?
316 is generally preferred for acidic liquid streams.
