Screen Material Selection Guide: 304 SS vs 316 SS vs T-430

Choosing the right stainless steel for your vibratory screen affects corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, screen life, food safety compliance, and total cost. ScreenerKing offers three stainless steel options—304 SS, 316 SS, and T-430—each suited to different applications and environments. This guide explains the differences and helps you select the right material for your process.

When to Choose 304 Stainless Steel

304 SS is the default screen material for most vibratory screening applications. Choose 304 when:

  • Your process environment is not highly corrosive or abrasive
  • You screen food ingredients in non-acidic, non-salty environments
  • Your cleaning procedures use standard (non-chlorinated) detergents
  • Chemical compatibility is not a concern
  • Budget is a consideration and the application does not demand 316 or T-430

Common 304 SS applications: Bakery flour, spices, sugar, dairy powders, general chemicals, plastics, powders, and general industrial screening.

When to Choose 316 Stainless Steel

316 SS is the upgrade choice when corrosion resistance matters. Choose 316 when:

  • You screen acidic materials (citric acid, vinegar, acidic food products, chemical acids)
  • Your process involves chlorides (salt, saltwater, brine, chloride-containing chemicals)
  • You clean screens with chlorine-based or chloride-containing sanitizers
  • Pharmaceutical or nutraceutical cGMP compliance requires 316 SS documentation
  • Your process environment includes marine or coastal conditions
  • Customer or regulatory audits specify 316 SS for product-contact surfaces

Common 316 SS applications: Pharmaceutical excipients, nutraceutical supplements, acidic foods, chemical processing, marine environments, wastewater treatment, and battery manufacturing.

When to Choose T-430 Stainless Steel

T-430 SS is the abrasion-resistance choice. Choose T-430 when:

  • You screen abrasive materials that wear through 304 or 316 screens quickly
  • Screen replacement frequency is a significant cost driver
  • Your materials include minerals, aggregates, sand, glass, ceramics, or recycled materials
  • Corrosion resistance is secondary to wear resistance (typically dry applications)

Common T-430 SS applications: Aggregate classification, mining, glass cullet, ceramics, recycling, metal powders, and any abrasive dry screening application.

Note: T-430 is magnetic, which means it will be attracted to magnetic separation equipment. Consider this if your process includes downstream magnetic separators.

Material Selection by Industry

Recommended Screen Material by Industry
Industry Recommended Material Reason
Food processing (general) 304 SS Food-grade standard, good corrosion resistance
Food processing (acidic/salty) 316 SS Resists pitting from acids and chlorides
Pharmaceutical 316 SS cGMP standard, resists aggressive cleaning chemicals
Nutraceutical 316 SS 21 CFR 111 compliance, chemical resistance
Chemical processing 304 or 316 SS Depends on chemical compatibility
Plastics 304 SS General purpose, adequate for most resins
Mining / minerals T-430 SS Maximum abrasion resistance
Aggregates / construction T-430 SS Withstands crushed stone and sand abrasion
Recycling T-430 SS Handles angular, abrasive recycled material
Wastewater 316 SS Resists corrosive wastewater chemistry
EV battery 316 SS NMP and electrolyte chemical resistance
Cannabis 304 SS Food-grade, easy to clean
