Vibratory Screening for Dairy and Milk Powders
Most dairy powder screening runs 40 to 100 mesh (425–150 µm), used to break up agglomerates and check-screen finished powder before packaging. Fat content, moisture pickup, and hygroscopic behaviour make de-blinding the deciding factor far more often than mesh count.
What makes dairy powder hard to screen
Hygroscopic behaviour
Fine and non-agglomerated milk and whey powders pull moisture from the air quickly (instantised, agglomerated powders are noticeably less prone to it). Once surface moisture rises, particles bridge across openings and the screen blinds. This is the single most common cause of throughput loss on dairy decks.
Fat content
Whole milk powder and cheese powder carry enough fat to smear across wire, particularly as product warms. Fat films tend to trap fines and progressively close the aperture.
Agglomerates are the product, not the contaminant
Instantised powders are deliberately agglomerated. Screening has to break oversized lumps without shattering the agglomerate structure that gives the powder its wetting and dispersion behaviour — which limits how aggressively the deck can be run.
Allergen and sanitary requirements
Dairy is a major allergen. Screens usually need to come apart quickly for cleaning and inspection between products, and be verifiable as clean.

These are sieve-standard openings. Actual woven wire cloth openings vary with wire diameter, so the figures on our mesh and wire sizing chart will read slightly smaller for the same mesh count — check that chart for the cloth you are ordering, and talk to us if the product sits between two ranges.
Screen material and configuration
304 stainless steel covers most dairy work. 316 stainless is worth specifying where cleaning chemicals are aggressive or where the plant standardises on it. Where a nickel-free contact surface is required, T430 is available.
Where blinding is the limiting factor, self-cleaning sandwich screens and de-blinding ball trays and kits generally recover more throughput than changing mesh count.
Common problems and what actually fixes them
Screen blinds within minutes of start-up
Almost always moisture. Confirm the powder's moisture content before changing mesh — a finer screen will not fix a wet feed. Self-cleaning sandwich screens with ball trays are the standard remedy.
Throughput drops through a shift
Fat smearing as the product warms. Check whether feed temperature is climbing and consider a de-blinding kit.
Good product carried over to the oversize discharge
Usually bed depth or feed rate rather than mesh. Verify feed distribution before re-specifying the screen.

What mesh size is used for milk powder?
Most milk powder screening falls between 40 and 100 mesh, with 60–80 mesh common for general check-screening.
Why does dairy powder blind screens so quickly?
Dairy powders are hygroscopic. Absorbed moisture makes particles stick to the wire and to each other, closing the openings. Self-cleaning configurations with ball trays are the usual answer.
Do I need 316 stainless for dairy?
Not usually — 304 stainless is common. 316 is specified where cleaning chemistry is aggressive or plant standards require it.
