Vibratory Screening for Salt and Seasoning

Standard table salt screening runs 20 to 40 mesh. Coarse and industrial salt uses 10 to 20 mesh; fine salt grading moves to 40 to 60 mesh. Spice and seasoning grading typically sits in the 10 to 30 mesh range.

What makes salt and seasoning hard to screen

Salt is corrosive

This is the defining constraint. Chloride exposure attacks carbon steel quickly and will pit lower-grade stainless over time, so alloy selection matters more here than in most food applications.

Caking from moisture

Salt absorbs moisture and cakes. Caked salt bridges openings and blinds the deck, particularly on finer meshes.

Seasoning blends are not uniform

A blend contains several ingredients with different particle sizes and densities. Screening a blend is a different problem from screening a single ingredient and often needs a coarser, more forgiving deck.

Oil and fat in seasoning

Oil-coated seasonings smear across wire in the same way fat-bearing dairy powders do, which closes the aperture progressively.

These are sieve-standard openings. Actual woven wire cloth openings vary with wire diameter, so the figures on our mesh and wire sizing chart will read slightly smaller for the same mesh count — check that chart for the cloth you are ordering, and talk to us if the product sits between two ranges.

Screen material and configuration

Corrosion resistance drives this application. 316 stainless steel is the safer specification for sustained salt contact; 304 is workable for dry, intermittent duty but will not last as well.

Where blinding is the limiting factor, self-cleaning sandwich screens and de-blinding ball trays and kits generally recover more throughput than changing mesh count.

Common problems and what actually fixes them

Pitting or rust on the screen

Alloy is under-specified for chloride exposure. Move to 316 stainless.

Screen blinds on fine salt

Moisture and caking. Control storage humidity and use a self-cleaning configuration.

Inconsistent separation on a seasoning blend

Multiple ingredients with different behaviours on one deck. Consider screening components before blending rather than after.
