Vibratory Screening for Sugar and Confectionery
Granulated sugar scalping generally runs 16 to 40 mesh, with powdered and icing sugar grading moving to 40 to 60 mesh. Sugar picks up moisture readily, so lump formation and screen blinding drive most specification decisions.
What makes sugar hard to screen
Moisture pickup and caking
Sugar is hygroscopic. Even modest humidity produces lumps that must be broken on the deck, and the same moisture makes those lumps stick to the wire and blind it.
Wide crystal size range
Coarse sanding sugar, standard granulated, caster, and icing sugar span a large particle range. A single mesh will not serve several grades — the deck has to be matched to the product.
Lump breaking versus contamination removal
These are different jobs. Scalping for foreign material can run coarse; de-lumping icing sugar needs a finer deck and usually a de-blinding aid.
Sticky residues at cleanout
Sugar residue left on a screen hardens. Screens that come apart quickly for washdown save more time than a marginal mesh improvement.

These are sieve-standard openings. Actual woven wire cloth openings vary with wire diameter, so the figures on our mesh and wire sizing chart will read slightly smaller for the same mesh count — check that chart for the cloth you are ordering, and talk to us if the product sits between two ranges.
Screen material and configuration
304 stainless steel is standard for dry sugar screening. Where moisture and cleaning chemistry are more aggressive, 316 is the safer specification.
Where blinding is the limiting factor, self-cleaning sandwich screens and de-blinding ball trays and kits generally recover more throughput than changing mesh count.
Common problems and what actually fixes them
Screen blinds on powdered sugar
Moisture plus fine particle size. Self-cleaning sandwich screens with ball trays are the standard fix.
Lumps passing through to packaging
The deck is scalping rather than de-lumping. A finer mesh combined with a de-blinding aid breaks lumps instead of carrying them over.
Capacity too low on granulated product
Check whether the mesh is finer than the job requires — contamination removal often runs comfortably at 16–30 mesh.
