Vibratory Sifting for Flour and Baking Ingredients
Most flour sifting runs 60 to 80 mesh for standard foreign-material removal and de-lumping. Coarse or high-capacity scalping runs 40 to 60 mesh; fine specialty grading moves to 80 to 100 mesh.
What makes flour hard to sift
Flour bridges readily
Fine, low-density particles bridge across openings and blind the screen, especially as mesh gets finer. Bridging is the main reason flour decks lose capacity.
Wide product range
All-purpose, whole wheat, semolina, and specialty flours differ enough in particle distribution that one mesh will not cover the plant.
Combustible dust
Flour dust is combustible. Screening equipment in flour handling should be specified with that in mind, including grounding and enclosure requirements.
Allergen segregation
Wheat is a major allergen. Screens on shared lines need to be removable, cleanable, and inspectable between products.

These are sieve-standard openings. Actual woven wire cloth openings vary with wire diameter, so the figures on our mesh and wire sizing chart will read slightly smaller for the same mesh count — check that chart for the cloth you are ordering, and talk to us if the product sits between two ranges.
Screen material and configuration
304 stainless steel is standard. 316 is specified where wash-down chemistry or plant standards call for it, and T430 where a nickel-free contact surface is required.
Where blinding is the limiting factor, self-cleaning sandwich screens and de-blinding ball trays and kits generally recover more throughput than changing mesh count.
Common problems and what actually fixes them
Capacity falls off on a fine deck
Bridging. A de-blinding aid usually recovers more throughput than stepping the mesh coarser, which risks passing contamination.
Foreign material reaching packaging
The deck is likely too coarse for the duty. Standard foreign-material removal generally wants 60–80 mesh.
Screen life shorter than expected
Check tension and feed distribution. Concentrated feed on one area of the deck wears mesh unevenly.

60–80 mesh covers most flour sifting. Coarse scalping uses 40–60 mesh; fine grading uses 80–100 mesh.
What balls are used to keep flour screeners from blinding?
De-blinding ball trays sit under the screen and tap the mesh as the deck vibrates. Polyurethane balls are the common choice for food work.
Does flour type change the mesh selection?
Yes. Semolina and whole wheat behave differently from all-purpose flour and often need a coarser deck.
