Clamp Rings on Round Vibratory Separators: Bolt-On vs. Quick-Release, Torque, and Why the Stack Leaks

Your separator's body isn't one piece. On a Sweco, Kason, Midwestern, Russell Finex or any other round separator, it's a stack: a table frame at the bottom, one or more screen frames, spacing frames, and a cover on top. On most machines nothing bolts through that stack vertically. What holds it together is a band wrapping the outside of each joint, squeezing it shut. That's the clamp ring.

It's on the OEM's daily checklist, and when it's wrong the symptoms look like other parts' problems: product on the floor, screens failing early, frames creeping around. Here's how to identify yours, torque it correctly, and order the right replacement.

Three parts, three names, and only one is the clamp ring

Clamp ring vs. tension ring matters most. On a pre-tensioned screen, mesh tension is built in at the factory — the cloth is drawn taut on its tension ring before it reaches your machine. The clamp ring secures that assembly in the joint; it doesn't stretch the mesh. When a loose clamp ring shows up as a "loose screen," what's happening is the ring letting the assembly shift and rotate — which Sweco identifies as a cause of screen fatigue. Tightening the ring stops the movement; it doesn't add tension to the cloth. (On a loose mesh setup, where plain cloth is clamped between frames rather than pre-mounted on a ring, the clamp ring does play a direct role — see loose mesh vs. pre-tensioned.) The center tie-down assembly sets the screen's center height, and it goes on after the clamp ring.

How many clamp rings do you have?

One per body joint — so go count your joints. Most single-deck machines have two or three, depending on whether they carry a spacing frame and a domed cover. Add a deck or a spacing frame and you add a joint. Don't assume from a spec sheet, though: architectures differ, and Sweco lists clamp ring quantities as "REF.," deferring to the sales drawing for your specific unit. One thing the clamp ring is not: a lifting point. Sweco states plainly that clamp rings are not designed to withstand the total machine weight and the unit should never be lifted from the top. Rig from the base.

Bolt-on vs. quick-release

Bolt-on

Every joint is a nut and bolt. Look for the brass coupling nut and no handle. Takes a wrench every time. This is the only style permitted on the bottom (table) joint.

Quick-release (over-center)

One joint is a lever handle working against a wrapped T-bolt. The T-bolt is still there — the handle replaces the wrench, not the bolt. Never use this as the bottom clamp.

Both joints use a brass coupling nut on a stainless bolt — that is the OEM spec, not a substitution. Measure the bolt shank to get your torque; don't read the label on the ring.

Both styles are a ring built from sections, joined where the band ends meet. The difference is how many of those joints are bolted. On a bolt-on ring every joint is a nut and bolt — Sweco's heavy-duty clamp ring assembly is built from half-sections drawn together by clamp ring bolts, washers and brass coupling nuts, the 1-3/4" long barrel nuts that pull the band ends toward each other. Through 60" that's two sections and two of each fastener; the 72" ring is built in three sections instead. On a quick-release ring, one joint is a standard bolt and the other is an over-center latch working against a wrapped T-bolt, a bolt with a T-shaped head that hooks into the band loop; the opposite loop captures the T-shaped part of the trunnion.

The T-bolt is still there. The latch replaces the wrench, not the bolt. Clampco, which manufactures these latches, defines an over-center handle as one that opens and closes without tools after the initial installation — and that first install sets the T-bolt with a tool, to a torque, which determines clamping force from then on. The handle only re-achieves the same geometry: a repeatable-position device, not a force-setting device.

Which style goes where. On Sweco's Low Profile line an over-center option is listed at every size from 18" up through 60" — the 72" is bolt-on only, with no over-center option at all. And one hard placement rule, which is a safety warning rather than a preference: never put an over-center latch-type band on the lower table joint. That joint carries the machine, and an improperly secured stack can come apart, with a risk of serious crushing injury. Sweco's classic-line manual states it as a caution, and it's on our own quick-release product page. So on a machine that ships over-center as standard, that's for the upper joints — the table joint still takes bolt-on.

Is quick-release faster? The honest answer is qualitative: fewer bolts to run means faster changeovers, and if you open the machine weekly for product changeovers it adds up.

Adjusting a quick-release latch. Six months on, the gasket takes a set and the joint starts to weep — and the handle can't fix that, because it isn't a force adjustment. With the machine locked out, loosen the bolted joint first, release the latch, then run the coupling nut farther onto the T-bolt — tighter — a half turn at a time. Re-latch, re-torque the bolted joint to spec, and check. The handle should close with firm, deliberate hand pressure: if it closes with one finger it's loose; if it takes a bar or a hammer it's too tight and you'll bend the latch. Keep fingers clear of the handle's path as it snaps over.

Torque: keyed to hardware diameter, not machine size

This is the most misquoted number on the machine, and the mistake is always the same — scoping it to the machine's size class or to the words "heavy duty." It's the bolt diameter:

Match the torque to the bolt you're holding, not to the label on the ring. Sweco's heavy-duty rings on the Low Profile line use 3/8" hardware, so a ring stamped heavy duty takes 32 ft-lb; the 40 ft-lb figure goes with 1/2" hardware. Guess from the label instead of measuring and you're 20–25% off one way or the other — and an under-torqued ring is the one that lets the frame stack release.

  • 60 in-lb needs an inch-pound wrench. A ft-lb click wrench can't read accurately at the bottom of its range, so chasing 5 ft-lb on a 20–100 ft-lb wrench means cranking the 18" ring until it clicks. A 1/4"-drive inch-pound wrench belongs on the cart — don't guess with the ft-lb wrench.
  • Assemble clean and dry. That's the default assumption behind any published torque figure — anti-seize cuts friction and produces meaningfully more preload at the same wrench reading, so if your plant mandates it, treat the published number as a ceiling. In sanitary service it has to be food-grade, and some plants ban it outright over an open product stream.
  • Don't confuse it with other fasteners. The same manual calls for 58 ft-lb on 1/2" vibrator mounting bolts and 137 ft-lb on 5/8" — a different part entirely.

Re-check twice, not once: run no more than 10 minutes, stop, lock out, re-check every clamp bolt; then again after an hour. After that it's the daily and weekly walks, plus a check before first start on a new machine. Torque figures differ between separator manufacturers and the ones above are Sweco's, so pull your own manual — and if you can't find it, call us with the nameplate model and we'll help you identify the machine.

Opening and closing the stack

Lock out power first. Sweco's reason is the right one to carry: the unit contains rotating parts, and accidental start-up could cause death or serious injury. On a separator that's not theoretical — a remote start or a level-probe interlock can call the motor with nobody near the panel.

What to grab beyond the obvious: an inch-pound torque wrench for 1/4" hardware, a nut splitter, a paint pen, and a spare gasket. Check lug clearance before committing to a socket — the lugs are the flanged tabs the bolt passes through, and a deep socket may be needed to clear the coupling nut. Two people or a lift for covers and frames on 40" and up; Sweco's own instruction is to remove parts one at a time with two operators standing 180 degrees apart. Screen cloth edges and tension ring rims cut hands, so keep gloves on, and wear eye protection if you end up splitting a nut.

Coming apart

  1. Release the center tie-down assembly first — the reverse of the closing order below. The upper frame won't lift until that nut is off.
  2. Loosen the bolts before unlatching a quick-release band. It's under tension, and Sweco's caution is blunt: failure to do this risks a hand injury.
  3. Loosen all bolts on every section before removing the ring, so you don't twist it. A twisted or bent ring never seats right again.
  4. Lift the upper frame carefully. If the screen comes up with it, don't raise the frame more than 2" — tap the tension ring down gently until the screen drops back. Handle the screen by its tension ring only, and set frames on their rim, not face-down on the gasket surface.

Going back together

  1. Clean every mating surface — screen edge, gasket, frame and clamp faces. Sweco calls this out specifically to ensure a proper seal, and it's the single most common cause of a leaking joint.
  2. Set the new screen with the tension ring right side up and the channel gasket — the U-shaped seal that rides the screen ring — correctly positioned. Reinstall the upper frame.
  3. Position the clamp ring and snug by hand until the band contacts all the way around.
  4. Seat it. Tap around the full circumference with a soft-faced or rubber-coated dead-blow hammer. An unseated band is a leak waiting to happen.
  5. Torque in three alternating passes — roughly a third, two-thirds, then full spec. Never take one bolt to full torque before the other; that cocks the band. There's no star or cross pattern here — a clamp ring has one to three bolts and no bolt circle, so that rectangular-deck habit doesn't transfer. Sweco's instruction is to tighten each set of bolts equally, to prevent false torque: a wrench reading that doesn't reflect real band tension. On a quick-release 18" ring with a single bolted joint, same three passes, tapping around the band between each.
  6. Then the center tie-down. Always tighten the clamp ring before the center tie-down assembly — that order helps ensure the screen's center sits at the proper vertical position and helps prevent premature screen failure.
  7. Re-check torque at 10 minutes and again at an hour, locked out both times.

When the nut is seized

Penetrant and patience first — a breaker bar snaps the bolt or bends the band, and now you need both parts. Don't heat it: you're inches from a rubber gasket and possibly combustible product dust. If it still won't move, a nut splitter on the brass is the clean answer, since brass is the softer metal and you save the bolt; these are 1-3/4" long coupling nuts, so plan on two cuts on opposite flats and check splitter clearance between the lugs. In combustible-dust service there's no cutoff wheel either — splitter or hand hacksaw, or pull the section to a clean area. In food or pharma service, use an approved penetrant and clean the joint before it closes. A seized or corroded nut is scrap, and so is the bolt if the threads pulled.

When to retire hardware: replace the brass nut if the threads are pulled or stripped or the flats are rounded; replace the bolt if it's bent or the threads are damaged. On a T-bolt, one starting to straighten out is finished. This is why the bolt-and-nut set is a shelf item, not a next-time item.

Do gaskets get replaced every time? No, and no manufacturer says they do. Clean them of solids build-up, check for wear, cracks or damage, and replace as needed.

Why the stack leaks

Product working out of a body joint is the number-one clamp ring symptom, and the reflex is to blame the gasket. Usually it's something else. Roughly in the order worth checking:

Cause What to look for
Debris on the mating surfaces Most common, easiest to fix. Clean every face each time you close the stack.
Band not properly seated On the daily checklist. This is what the dead-blow tap is for.
Under-torque / loose ring A loose ring lets the frames rotate — damaging the gasket, frame, and screen. A documented cause of screen fatigue, not just a leak.
Ring stretched / lugs bottomed out Check the gap between sections with the bolts at full torque. No gap left means no clamping travel left — the band is stretched or it's the wrong size, and no amount of torque fixes it. Order a ring, not a gasket.
Frame flange worn, dented, or eroded The abrasive-service answer. A good gasket on a thinned or gouged flange still leaks.
Gasket worn, cracked, or crimped Elastomers dry out and go brittle. Replacement screen gaskets are stocked 18"–60" in FDA white rubber and neoprene. Don't over-stretch on installation, and store spares flat, never on a hook.
Wrong gasket profile Match the channel profile, not just the diameter.
Over-torque Deforms the deck and breaks the clamp; under-torque lets the frames move and chews the gasket early. Russell Finex documents both directions on its own sieves.

Two field checks worth building into the walk-by. First, strike a paint-pen witness mark across the ring and both frames after torquing — one glance on the next pass tells you whether anything moved, cold, from ten feet away, no tools. (The same trick across the screen edge and frame catches screen rotation; see screen tension and separation efficiency.) Second, after about 30 minutes of running, look for a warm spot around the ring — Sweco says a warm spot means the ring may be slipping and needs tightening. A non-contact IR thermometer reads it from a safe distance; don't hand-check a band on a running machine.

Materials, and the sanitary question

Clamp rings and their bolts are stainless — 304 standard, 316 the upgrade for corrosive or heavy washdown duty, the same framing that applies to your screen wire alloy, where 316L is the callout for ultra-low-contamination work.

Why brass nuts on a stainless bolt? Stainless-on-stainless threads gall — the passive film breaks down under thread pressure and the surfaces effectively cold-weld. A softer copper-alloy nut breaks that like-on-like contact. This is the OEM's own spec, not an aftermarket substitution: Sweco calls out brass coupling nuts across the range. The trade-off is that the nut becomes the wear part, which is why we stock bolt-and-brass-nut sets and T-bolts separately.

For food, pharma, and other sanitary lines: the 3-A sanitary standards' exclusion of brass, bronze and copper applies to product-contact surfaces. The clamp ring and its hardware wrap the outside of the body and aren't in the product stream, which is why a brass nut is acceptable there when it wouldn't be on a wetted part. What does deserve attention in washdown service is that a clamped joint is a crevice by design, and chlorinated sanitizers concentrate exactly there — a real argument for 316, and for cleaning the joint properly every time it's opened. Sanitary lines should be running pre-tensioned screens as well, since there's no loose cloth edge to trap product. Material certification and a Certificate of Conformance with alloy traceability are available on request.

How to order the right clamp ring

Five things tell us exactly what you need:

  1. Machine nominal diameter — from the nameplate model number, not a tape measure. Not sure? The screen identification guide and our brand compatibility pages will get you there, or call and read us the plate.
  2. Stylebolt-on or quick-release.
  3. Position in the stack — the bottom joint takes bolt-on.
  4. Hardware diameter — measure the bolt shank, not the wrench flats.
  5. Material grade, if you need something other than standard stainless.

Rings are in stock 18", 24", 30", 40", 48" and 60" in both styles, from about $270, and you can order them online. 36" and 72" are standard round separator diameters — we stock 36" screens and gaskets — but they fall outside the stocked ring ladder, so call and we'll confirm what we can get for your diameter rather than shipping you the nearest size. A clamp ring that doesn't match the frame diameter is not a part you can make work.

The operating pattern worth copying. Sweco recommends stocking one complete clamp ring assembly per unit as a spare, and the plants that run best treat it the way they treat screens. Keep a spare ring, a spare bolt-and-nut set, and two channel gaskets on the shelf. When you open the machine, fresh hardware goes on and the pulled parts get inspected at your leisure instead of under a line-down clock.

Frequently asked questions

What is a clamp ring on a vibratory separator?
The band that wraps the outside of the separator body and holds the stacked frames — and the screen between them — together at each joint. It's not the ring your screen cloth is bonded to; that's the tension ring, and it ships as part of the screen.

How tight should a clamp ring be?

No — there are only one to three bolts and no bolt circle. Snug by hand, tap around the band with a dead-blow hammer to seat it, then bring the bolts up in three alternating passes so no single bolt reaches full torque first.

Is a quick-release clamp ring really tool-free?
After the initial installation, yes. But that first install sets the T-bolt with a tool, to a torque, and that determines the clamping force. To change the force you adjust the coupling nut, not the handle. Loosen the bolted joint before releasing the latch — the band is under tension — and never use a quick-release ring as the bottom clamp.

My separator is leaking at a body joint. Is the gasket bad?
Maybe — but check the cheap causes first: debris on the mating surfaces, an unseated band, an under-torqued ring. Then check whether the ring still has clamping travel left; if the sections have closed up at full torque, the band is stretched. And look for a warm spot after 30 minutes of running — that means the ring may be slipping. Read it with a non-contact IR thermometer, never by hand on a running machine.
